Police issue warning after kids as young as 12 caught playing on roofs in Kirkcudbright

Children as young as 12 have been playing on roofs of old buildings in Kirkcudbright.

Police were called out after a concerned local spotted the kids on last week.

And residents say this is not the first time it has happened, with buildings near the marina proving particularly popular for the children.

Provost Lesley Garbutt said: “It is extremely silly and extremely dangerous.

“It seems to be the latest craze at the moment where you get to that age and are able to go out without your parents.

“It was brought up at a recent community council meeting where someone had said they had seen some children on the old fisherman’s club next to the sailing club. It is in a poor state of repair and he told them it wasn’t a good idea but he received abuse.

“It is an extremely dangerous practice.”

Community Policing Sergeant Colin Scott said: “We had a report of youths playing on roofs in the marina area of the town.

“It is an ongoing issue and some 12-year-olds have been traced.

“We are speaking to parents because not only are they playing on the roofs, but they are also playing near water.”
