Police issue warning after cyclist caught on hard shoulder of M55 motorway

Lancashire Police has issued a warning after discovering a cyclist illegally riding on the hard shoulder of the M55.

The footage from the patrol car shows a cyclist on the hard shoulder, oblivious to the officers behind.

They tweeted: "Although MN31 agreed that it was a lovely day for you to be out and about doing your daily exercise. They didn’t think the hard shoulder of the M55 was the best choice for a cycle."

The date stamp on the video showed that it was taken on Sunday afternoon at around 12.45pm.

It is not clear exactly where the incident happened.

And the force has not revealed what penalty the rogue cyclist faced.

The motorway connects Blackpool to the M6 at Preston and is just over 12 miles long.

The Highway Code clearly states that motorways must not be used by pedestrians, holders of provisional motorcycle or car licences, riders of motorbikes under 50cc, cyclists, horse riders and certain slow-moving vehicles and those carrying oversized loads (except by special permission).

Agricultural vehicles are also banned along with powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
