Police issue urgent dispersal orders for two areas this weekend after gangs of yobs go on rampage

Police have issued dispersal orders for two area of Wigan following 'unacceptable' levels of anti-social behaviour.

The orders, which will come into place in Lowton and Platt Bridge this afternoon (November 5), give constables and police community support officers the power to disperse crowds and prevent nuisance.

Officers have decided to take action in response to large groups of youths 'lighting fires, setting off fireworks, causing criminal damage and committing other offences' around the Braithwaite Road area.

Police say it has had 'a huge impact' on residents and resulted in firefighters being called out on several times.

The powers will be in force in the area from 4pm until 3am on Saturday.

A further order is set to be in place between 4pm on Saturday and 3am on Sunday.

Officers say parents have been dropping their children off in the area, and have warned them not to do so this weekend.

A post on the GMP Leigh, Atherton and Hindley read: "Officers from GMP and Wigan Council have been taking action against young people identified and have also been working with schools to reduce these incidents, however unfortunately some young people haven't been getting the message that this behaviour is unacceptable and needs to stop.

"We've also identified that some parents have been dropping their children off in the area, and returning to pick them up later, however some consideration needs to be given to the impact this is having on people who live there.

"Please be aware that dropping young people off there this weekend may well result in you having to pick them up later from a police station."

Police have also issued a dispersal order for the Platt Bridge and Spring View areas of Wigan following a spate of anti-social behaviour incidents involving young people.

The powers will be in force between 4pm today and 3am on Saturday.

The dispersal orders give officers the power to ask troublemakers to leave and not return to the area they cover.

Anyone doing so would be liable for arrest.
