Police issue update on six men arrested after reported rape of teenage girl in city centre

A number of men arrested after reports of a city centre rape have now been released under investigation, police confirmed today.

Police converged on a Liverpool city centre apart-hotel yesterday morning (Sunday) after a 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped.

The incident was reported just before 4.30am yesterday, when police received reports that a teenage girl from Merseyside was assaulted in an apartment at the Uno building on Temple Court.

A large number of police vehicles could be seen congregated outside the building, off Victoria Street, while forensic examinations were made yesterday morning.

Six men were subsequently arrested and taken to police stations across Merseyside to be interviewed by detectives.

Two 20-year-old men, one from Congleton in Cheshire and one from Stoke-on-Trent, were arrested on suspicion of rape.

Four other men, three aged 18 and one 19, all from Stoke-on-Trent, were arrested on suspicion of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent.

A Merseyside police spokesperson said in a written media statement: "All six men (two arrested on suspicion of rape and four arrested on suspicion of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent) have been released under investigation pending further enquiries."
