Police issue update on 'human remains' found in Chloe Mitchell murder investigation

Police in Northern Ireland have confirmed the human remains found in Ballymena earlier this month were those of Chloe Mitchell.

The search for the missing 21-year-old was called off on Sunday, June 11, as suspected human remains were found in Ballymena.

And in an update on the Chloe Mitchell murder investigation on Monday afternoon, the PSNI said the identification process has now concluded, Belfast Live reports.

Detective Chief Inspector Richard Millar said: “The identification process on human remains found in Ballymena on Sunday 11th June has now concluded and have been confirmed as those of Chloe Mitchell.”

Ms Mitchell was last seen on CCTV in Ballymena town centre in the early hours of Saturday, June 3.

A huge search operation was launched, with Community Rescue Service volunteers scouring steep banks around the River Braid.

The search was called off after suspected human remains were found in Ballymena over a week later.

Detectives investigating her disappearance have launched a murder inquiry and two men have been charged in connection with the 21-year-old's death.

A 26-year-old man was charged with Ms Mitchell’s murder and a 34-year-old man was charged with assisting an offender.

When they appeared in court on June 12, counsel for both defendants cited “significant mental health” difficulties.

Meanwhile, vigils to remember Ms Mitchell were held in her home town of Ballymena and in Belfast in recent weeks.
