Police issue update on death of seriously injured missing pensioner

Police are treating the death of a missing pensioner found with serious injuries in Runcorn last month as non-suspicious.

In a statement issued today, a Cheshire Constabulary spokesman said officers were called to reports of a missing 76-year-old man at 10pm on Wednesday, April 7.

They launched a search for the man, assisted by Cheshire Search and Rescue and the police helicopter, and they found the pensioner with “serious injuries” near The Windmill pub on the outskirts of Windmill Hill.

He was taken to hospital but died two weeks later.

The spokesman said the force could not confirm whether a rumour on social media that the man had suffered a head injury was true as the nature of any trauma will form part of the inquest.

Police have not released the name of the deceased and there is no appeal in relation to the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The constabulary spokesman said: “At 10pm on Wednesday, April 7, police were called to reports of a missing 76-year-old man in Runcorn.

"Local officers, supported by Cheshire Search and Rescue services and the police helicopter, conducted a search of the area and he was located near to The Windmill public house with serious injuries.

"The man was taken to Aintree Hospital but sadly, despite the best efforts all those involved he passed away on Wednesday, April 21.

"His death is not being treated as suspicious and a case file will be prepared for the coroner."
