Police issue update after man's body found in park

Merseyside Police has issued an update after the body of a man was found in a city park a week ago.

The tragic discovery was made in The Mystery, also known as Wavertree Playground, at about 2pm last Friday.

Today, Merseyside Police confirmed the death was no longer being treated as unexplained and is believed to be non-suspicious.

And it has emerged the body belonged to a man in his 40s

A post mortem examination is soon to be carried out to establish how the man died.

A file is to be prepared for the city's coroner.

The man's body was found by a member of the public, close to a railway line.

Locals said the area of clearing, close to undergrowth, and behind a bowling green, near busy Smithdown Road, was popular with drinkers and drug users.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene, on Grant Avenue, and spent a number of hours investigating the tragedy.

Empty alcohol cans littered the site.

Other photos taken last week showed police officers taking a bag of items away, which appeared to have lager cans inside.

One resident said: "It's a relief to know the man's death wasn't criminal.

"But it's a tragedy all the same, that somebody died in such a lonely, gloomy spot.

"You can tell if you venture into that clearing that it's a real haven for drinkers and, sometimes homeless people, to hang out."

Enquiries are ongoing to identify the man and inform his next of kin, police said.
