Police have released a statement after officers descended on a busy south Manchester road this morning.
Three police cars were seen stopped with their flashing lights on along Withington Road, in Whalley Range, near to Yarburgh Street at around 11.40am today (November 14).
The cars were parked up near to the Redeemed Christian Church Of God, on Withington Road.
Greater Manchester Police says its officers attended the scene after receiving a report of a man seeking refuge at a church in the area, at around 11am.
Once at the scene, police arrested a man on suspicion of possession of a bladed article.
He is currently in police custody for questioning, and officers are continuing their enquiries.
It's not believed that the man had been posing a threat earlier this morning, and GMP says there is no risk to the public.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 11am today (Sunday, November 14) we were called to a report of a man seeking refuge at a church on Withington Road, Manchester.
"Officers attended and arrested a 40-year-old on suspicion of possession of a bladed article.
"He has been taken to custody for questioning.
"Enquiries are ongoing but there is no risk to the public."
