Police issue statement on vile Emiliano Sala image and confirm investigation ahead of Swansea City vs Cardiff City clash

Police are investigating the circulation of a sickening image relating to the tragic death of Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala ahead of this weekend's South Wales derby.

Sala joined Cardiff from French club Nantes for a club record fee of £15m in January, but only two days after his transfer to South Wales was announced, he was tragically killed in a plane crash.

on social media sites on Friday, just two days before the Swans and the Bluebirds meet at the Liberty Stadium.

adding that they will work closely with police to help identify the culprit.

Fans of both clubs were also quick to condemn the shameful image.

And South Wales Police have urged people not to share the image as they may be committing an offence.

A police statement read: "We are aware and have reviewed an image on social media relating to Emiliano Sala and we are investigating in relation to an offence under the Malicious Communications Act.

"We will be working closely with both Swansea City and Cardiff City football clubs to identify the source.

"We would remind people not to share the image as they may be committing an offence.

"Anyone with information should contact 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting occurrence 1900395865."

Swansea take on Cardiff at 12pm on Sunday.
