Police issue statement following incident which closed major city centre roads

Merseyside Police has issued a statement following an incident which closed a number of major city centre roads.

Emergency services were called to an incident on the walkway over Byrom Street and Hunter Street, close to the Churchill Flyover.

Drivers in the area reported being trapped in queues of traffic on the roads around the incident that is believed to have been ongoing since shortly after 9pm on Friday .

Access to both the Kingsway and Queensway tunnels were affected and a number of people reported delays and tailback queues on Scotland Road , Islington , Great Crosshall Street and Victoria Street.

Today Merseyside Police confirmed officers were called to the scene due to a concern for the safety of a man.

A spokeswoman told the ECHO : "Police were called to reports of a concern for safety of a male who was later taken to hospital."

The man's condition is not known.

A large number of police officers  attended the incident and could be seen on the walkway and blocking traffic from all directions.

Fire crews  and paramedics from the  North West Ambulance Service  were also in attendance at the incident to assist police.

It is understood the roads were cleared by around 11pm.
