Police issue scam warning after fraudsters target small County Durham businesses

A warning has been issued by police after fraudsters carried out a series of suspected thefts at small businesses across County Durham.

Durham Constabulary said suspected thefts occurred at stores in Consett, Willington, Chester-le-Street, Howden-le-wear, and Darlington throughout November.

The suspect is believed to have used a technique called ‘Ringing the changes’ which is where they will ask for a sum of money to be changed into notes or coins, for example, 1 x £20 notes to 2 x £10.

Then, the suspect hides the notes once receiving them and deceives the cashier by stating they did not receive any money.

After convincing the cashier they didn't receive the notes, the suspect persuades them to hand over further cash.

Officers are now urging small businesses to be on the lookout for this scam.

PC Paul Canvin, from Crook response, said: "These fraudsters are very convincing, using well-rehearsed scripts to get what they want.

"They will often target lone cashiers working in small convenience stores, newsagents, and petrol stations.

"Please be wary and if you have your concerns, please get in touch - in an emergency, always dial 999."

Anyone with information about these incidents or who is able to identify the suspect(s) is asked to contact PC Canvin via email paul.canvin@durham.police.uk.
