An 11-year-old girl who was knocked down in Kilwinning last night as the town celebrated its Christmas Lights switch-on suffered serious injuries, police say.
The youngster was struck by a car in Lauchlan Way at around 6.55pm.
Paramedics raced to the scene and took the schoolgirl to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock where doctors describe her injuries as serious but not life-threatening.
The road was closed down for a short time following the incident.
Promoting Kilwinning, who organised the switch on, wished the youngster well in a Facebook post.
It read: "We understand that a young person was hurt in an accident on Lauchlan Way, we wish her a speedy recovery."
