Police issue fresh warning of HMRC scam threatening 'arrest warrant'

The public are being warned about a fresh scam in which people are threatened with an arrest warrant by someone claiming to be from the HMRC if they don't pay an 'outstanding payment'.

Greater Manchester Police have said the scam involves a caller claiming to be a HMRC officer informing people that they owe money regarding their income tax.

The caller then claims that if they don't immediately pay the 'outstanding balance' then an arrest warrant will be issued.

Posting on the Facebook pages of Trafford South and Fallowfield, Withington, Levenshulme, and Burnage, police urged the public it was "definitely a scam".

The news of the scam follows a similar one earlier this year, which prompted Martin Lewis to say: "Never pay. Call HMRC from ANOTHER phone if u want to check."

A spokesperson for Action Fraud told the Manchester Evening News : “If you receive an unexpected call, text or email which requests your personal or financial information, take a moment to reflect and step back from the situation.

"Ask yourself would a genuine bank or organisation really contact me in this way? If something feels wrong, it’s usually right to question it, so trust your instincts.

“If you receive a call like this hang up. Check the advice published on the HMRC website about how to recognise scams from genuine HMRC contact, and report your experience to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via their website .”

Anyone with details on any suspicious emails or phone calls can also forward the information on to the HMRC's phishing team at phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk.
