Police issue dispersal order for Welsh beach after anti-social behaviour complaints

South Wales Police has issued a dispersal order to stop people causing grief for families on a popular beach. Residents living near the beach at Mariners Quay in Port Talbot have said they have been made to endure incessant anti-social behaviour in recent weeks including people visiting the area and congregating there for the day.

In response to numerous complaints from residents in the area the force has issued a section 35 dispersal order giving officers the power to exclude a person from the area for a period up to 48 hours with a written notice. The dispersal order will be in place from midday on Friday to midday on Sunday, and will then be reviewed, the force said.

Neighbourhood Police Inspector Andy Matthews explained: “Over the past two weeks we have had numerous complaints from residents about people congregating, drinking and being anti-social in these areas, and anticipate further issues on the weekend ahead.”

Wales is expected to see daytime temperatures of between 21 to 23 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, and PI Matthews said the force is expecting anti-social behaviour issues in the area and will be prepared to take action.

“With the weather improving we want to ensure that families and residents can enjoy this lovely part of Port Talbot,” he continued. “Our message is clear, anyone enjoying the area and not causing issues can continue to do so. The section 35 order is for those not only causing concerns for residents but also putting themselves at risk.”

The force said it would also use its powers to confiscate alcohol. It has asked all residents to report any anti-social behaviour to them by contacting 101.
