Police issue dispersal order around Anfield as Liverpool lift Premier League trophy

Merseyside Police have issued a dispersal order around Anfield as fans gather ahead of Liverpool lifting the Premier League trophy.

Roads around Anfield were closed and fans ordered to stay away by authorities amid the coronavirus pandemic.

But fans still welcomed the team bus with flares ahead of their clash with Chelsea and let off fireworks loudly above the stadium in the second half.

And Merseyside Police have brought in a 48-hour dispersal order to prevent any mass gatherings, announcing that any gatherings of people in breach of Covid-19 regulations would be broken up by police.

A statement read: "A Dispersal Zone is now in place outside Anfield Stadium following increased numbers of people gathering near to the ground tonight. Please don't put yourselves and others at risk, the best view of the trophy presentation will be on the TV."

The Merseyside Police chief constable sent a plea to fans ahead of Jurgen Klopp's press conference this week with the Liverpool manager echoing his thoughts.

But fans still arrived to greet the team bus and remained outside the cordon that was set up outside the stadium.

Merseyside Police earlier dispelled rumours the Liverpool squad could appear outside the stadium after lifting the trophy.

Their dedicated Liverpool FC Twitter account posted a statement reading: "Rumours are circulating on social media about the team making an appearance outside Anfield tonight.

"This 100% will NOT happen. The only place to watch tonight's celebrations is on TV. Please listen to the advice of your manager and players. It's what they want."

After a 30-year wait for title glory, a podium was built into The Kop for the trophy presentation to take place with club legend Kenny Dalglish drafted in to hand out medals to Jurgen Klopp's squad.
