Police issue dispersal notice for Formby Beach as five arrests made

Police have cracked down on antisocial behaviour at Formby Beach after arrests were made during large gatherings on Wednesday.

A dispersal notice has been issued for the Merseyside beach, meaning police can order members of the public who they suspect may cause trouble to leave the area.

It remains in place until Friday afternoon.

Five people were arrested for various offences including drunk and disorderly behaviour and possession of drugs, and a speaker and music equipment was seized.

Elsewhere, people caused a headache for residents living in Salford Quays after they flocked to the area to swim, party and fight when temperatures hit 31C on Thursday.

A resident named Luca, who lives near Erie Basin, shared pictures of people jumping from bridges into the water.

Photos also showed large groups gathering without socially distancing.

He said people regularly congregated in the area during the summer.

He said: "They don't just drop rubbish everywhere, but also gas canisters all over the path it's disgusting.

"They come in groups with loud sound systems and start a party right at the neighbours' doors.

"I've witnessed a fight with a teenager's face covered in blood last time we had good weather.

"People throw themselves from the bridge at all times. Not just teenagers but I've also witnessed guys well in their thirties and forties."

A major incident was declared in Bournemouth on Thursday after thousands of people went to the beach to soak up the rays.

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council said services were "completely overstretched" as they tried to keep people safe.
