Police issue 'cry' for patience after four killed on Far North Queensland roads

Police are investigating the deaths of four people in Far North Queensland over the weekend.

Far North Queensland Police have issued a warning to drivers to slow down after four people were killed in separate crashes on the region's roads over the weekend.

Among them was a 16-year-old boy, who officers said was in a car carrying several other teenagers — and driven by an 18-year-old — that rolled at Lockhart River in Cape York about 8:40pm on Sunday.

He was taken to the local health centre but died a few hours later.

The driver and three other passengers escaped injury.

Senior Sergeant Cary Coolican from Cairns Police described the weekend as "tragic".

"We've seen two young people, aged 16 and 21, die in the last couple of days so we are all hoping that we don't have any more tragic news to give to parents in particular," Senior Sergeant Coolican said.

"This is a cry for everyone to be patient on the roads, pay attention to the road rules, slow down and drive to the conditions.

Three killed on Saturday

A 62-year-old man from Manunda was killed when he lost control of his motorbike near Almaden, west of Cairns, on Saturday afternoon.

Police say the man was a motorcycling enthusiast who had been on a ride with two others when he lost control on an unsealed road and crashed.

His friends activated an EPIRB but paramedics weren't able to revive him and he died at the scene.

A short time later, a 21-year-old man from Julatten died when his ATV buggy crashed on Quaids Road at Mount Molloy.

He had been riding with two friends who tried to help him after the buggy rolled down an embankment. He was unable to be revived.

And a man aged in his 40s died on Saturday morning, after crashing his car near Normanton in the Gulf.

His two passengers, a man and woman both aged 19, were taken to the Mt Isa Base Hospital in a stable condition.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating all four incidents.
