Police issue another £10,000 fine after finding 60 people partying in a two-bedroom Manchester city centre flat

Police have handed out another £10,000 fine after they discovered up to 60 people at a party in a two bedroom flat in the city centre.

Officers were called to a residential property in The Works, Withy Grove, at about 12.30am last Sunday (November 1).

They found 50 to 60 people within the flat, who were not wearing face coverings or observing social distancing.

Music was being played through 'commercial-sized speakers', GMP said.

Police have now fined the organiser of the party, a 38-year-old man, for breaking lockdown rules.

Superintendent Chris Hill, of GMP's City of Manchester district, said: "Though Greater Manchester Police follows national guidance to engage with individuals, explain restrictions and encourage compliance before enforcing, people must take responsibility for their actions and organising this flat party was a clear act of non-compliance which put those in attendance at risk of Covid and could, ultimately, increase demand on the NHS.

"As well as prompting the organiser to reflect on his actions and consider the risks, I hope the issuing of this £10,000 Fixed Penalty Notice warns anyone planning a gathering of more than 30 people of the potential consequences of doing so.

"I would also like to use this opportunity to encourage members of the public to comply with the restrictions which are there to protect everyone, including them and their loved ones, from the virus."

It is the latest fine to be handed to organisers of events such breach lockdown rules.

Police broke up a party at a rented flat in Stockport, where 50 people were found with many crammed into a small room on October 24.

Earlier this week, officers discovered a wedding party in Salford being attended by 200 people, and 40 people were at an illegal gathering in Bolton.

Police have also previously broken up a flat party with 'bouncers, DJs and a buffet' at a property in Angel Meadow in the city centre.

Under new laws introduced in the summer in response to organised raves, those responsible for illegal gatherings where more than 30 people attend can be fined £10,000.
