Police issue £200 fine to man who travelled 14 miles with family to play Pokemon

Police have fined a man £200 after he took his family out in the late evening to play Pokemon in breach of the national coronavirus lockdown.

Warwickshire Police issued the fine after the man and his family travelled 14 miles from Bedworth to Kenilworth late on Tuesday evening to play Pokemon Hunt.

It prompted an officer to tweet: "Travelling from Bedworth to Kenilworth in the late evening to “Pokemon Hunt” is not essential. We will enforce blatant breaches of the lockdown and this is what happened this evening.

"A £200 fine has been issued. Please #StayHome. PC Jones."

The man, who has not been identified was fined £200 for "contravening the requirement to not leave or be outside the place they live without a reasonable excuse".

"Everyone has a part to play in ensuring they slow the spread of the virus," a police spokeswoman told the BBC.

"We would like to remind people they must not leave or be outside their home unless they have a reasonable excuse."

Earlier this week, Derbyshire Police were forced to refund £200 fines to two women who'd travelled separately to a reservoir to exercise.

Officers wrongly deemed their takeaway cups of tea to be "picnics".

Under the national lockdown, people should only leave their homes for essential travel - such as work (where people cannot work from home), to buy essentials or to access medical treatment.

People are also allowed to leave their homes to escape domestic abuse.

Pokemon Go is a Japanese augmented reality game for smartphones, which was launched five years ago. It allows players to hunt for characters that "appear" in real-life places.
