Police examine vehicle in connection with Broome fatal crash

Forensic officers examine a vehicle as part of an ongoing investigation into the death of a 37-year-old woman in Broome.

Police are examining a vehicle after a woman died after a suspected hit-and-run in Broome on Tuesday night.

The 37-year-old was found seriously injured on Clementson Street, in the town's busy southern industrial area, just after 11pm on Tuesday.

She was taken to Broome Hospital but died as a result of her injuries.

Police confirmed this morning that they had spoken to the male driver of a vehicle who was assisting them with their investigation.

Forensic officers were seen examining a ute at Broome Police Station this morning.

Incident tragic for the community

Broome Senior Sergeant Dave Whitnell said the woman had been staying at a camp near where the crash occurred, and had suffered "grave" injuries.

"It's a tragic event, and we really want to put the pieces together and determine what's occurred," Snr Sgt Whitnell said.

"We're not attributing blame to anyone in particular, but we need to piece together what's occurred so we can deal with it appropriately.

"It's a tragic event, not only for the family but for the community as a whole, and we want to give people some closure as to the death."

Police contact probed

Snr Sgt Whitnell said police had spoken to the woman in Broome's Chinatown central business district earlier in the evening.

As a result, he said officers from WA Police's Internal Affairs division would also investigate the incident.

"She was spoken to by police in relation with some really minor matters, and that's about the extent of what occurred there," Snr Sgt Whitnell said.

"Anyone that's involved with police within 24 hours of their death, internal affairs will investigate the circumstance."

Footage still needed

After initial involvement from both the Homicide and Major Crash squads, police confirmed this morning that the incident was being treated as a traffic incident.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police are still looking to speak to anyone in the Clementson Street area between 10 and 11.30pm on Tuesday night

They are also still keen to obtain any dashcam or CCTV footage from the area covering that timeframe.

Anyone with information should contact Broome Police or Crime Stoppers.
