Police investigating the disappearance of toddler William Tyrell have arrested a 63-year-old man on the New South Wales north coast in relation to two alleged child sexual assaults in the 1980s.

Police said the Bonny Hills man was taken into custody on Wednesday and was being questioned over the alleged sexual assault of a six-year-old girl and a three-year-old girl in Sydney in 1987.

He was arrested by officers from Strike Force Rosann, which was set up to investigate the disappearance of three-year-old William Tyrell from his grandmother’s backyard in September 2014.

Police said the arrest did not relate to the Tyrell case, and investigations into that matter were continuing.

More than 200 volunteers joined the search for Tyrell in Kendall, on the NSW mid-north coast, after he disappeared on 12 September.

Police revealed last week they were investigating the possibility the boy was abducted by a paedophile ring operating in the area.
