Police investigating UKIP candidate over alleged racist attack

An incident of alleged racist abuse is being investigated following an altercation involving a UKIP candidate during the early hours of this morning.

Former Blundellsands Labour councillor Dan Lewis alleges Molyneux ward candidate Peter Harper 'stomped on his foot' and told him to 'speak English' during the election count at Aintree Racecourse .

Merseyside Police confirmed they are investigating the incident.

Mr Lewis said: "I was walking along and I saw him see me, and he stopped his conversation and just glared at me.

"I just kept smiling because my mother taught me to love people.

"He was visibly angry by my presence, and then he comes over and stomps on my foot.

Twitter reacts: Local elections 2019

"He said 'Do you know who I am?', I said 'bruv, I don't care who you are' and then he told me to 'speak English'."

Wirral Council is now in No Overall Control: What does that mean, and what happens now?

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "Police received a report that a man in his 20s had his foot trodden on and that a racist comment was then made towards him.

"Enquiries into the matter are ongoing and witnesses will be spoken to."

A spokesman for UKIP said: “UKIP does not comment on allegations.”
