Police investigating stranger rape in Bolton no longer treating report as genuine

Detectives investigating a 'stranger rape' at house in Bolton say they are no long treating the report as genuine.

Police were called to reports that a woman had been raped at a property on Westgate Avenue in Halliwell on June 6.

An investigation was launched by GMP who described the alleged attack as 'shocking' and 'frightening'.

Several days later, on June 9, the woman told officers that the original report had not been genuine.

The investigation has now ended.

Detective Chief Inspector Christopher Bridge, of GMP's Bolton District said: “We take all reports of sexual offences extremely seriously and the welfare of the victim is our priority.

“We have carried out extensive enquiries and there were increased patrols in the area to reassure members of the community and encourage people who were understandably concerned to approach us.

“Help and support is always there for people who report sexual offences. If you want to make a report of a sexual offence, you will be taken seriously.
