Police investigating online abuse aimed at Welsh football fan who raised £36,000 for crying German fan

Police are investigating the online abused aimed at Welsh football fan Joel Hughes.

Mr Hughes, from Pontypridd raised over £36,000 for a young German fan who was seen crying on TV and on the big screen at Wembley when Germany were knocked out of Euro 2020 by England.

The father-of-two was targeted by trolls and had his personal details leaked online.

Mr Hughes said he found the abuse ironic, seeing as he raised the money for a girl getting abused online - you can read more about his fundraiser here.

"The abuse is horrendous and it's targeting my family. They are posting my private details online," he said.

South Wales Police have said the abuse has been reported. They said: "We are providing support to the victim and his family."

A force spokesman said: "An investigation is now underway to identify those responsible."

Mr Hughes was able to track down the young girl and her family, they requested the money to be donated to the charity Unicef.

On their page, JustGiving said that "none of this would have been possible without the actions of one man taking a stand against hate in football."
