Police investigating letters with false COVID-19 claims

ACT Policing are forensically examining letters which make false claims about COVID-19 as they urge those with information about how they were distributed to come forward.

The letters were distributed to homes in Downer on Friday, September 25, as well as homes in Braddon and Holt.

Detective Superintendent Stephen Turnbull of the COVID-19 Response Taskforce Detective said the letters were being examined for fingerprints and DNA.

"We are calling for any witnesses who may have observed a person in Downer, Braddon or Holt distributing these COVID-19 letters," Detective Superintendent Turnbull said.

"We are urging residents of these suburbs to check their CCTV or dash-cam footage for any video that may assist in the investigation.

"If members of the public have any concerns regarding COVID-19, the ACT Government has a dedicated website containing extensive information and a COVID-19 hotline - 6207 7244."

Letters containing false claims about the virus were distributed in July throughout Garran and Watson.
