Police looking into helicopter trip to pick up roast beef barm to see if it broke lockdown rules

An investigation has been launched into a helicopter pilot's apparent trip to pick up a roast beef in caramelised onion gravy sandwich.

A video posted online earlier this week showed a man in the helicopter to collect the sandwich from Chipping Farm Shop in the Ribble Valley, near Preston.

The BBC quoted a local resident as saying that he had tracked the helicopter from City Airport in Salford travelling to the shop using a flight radar website - that would have made it an 80-mile round trip.

Flight tracking websites show a flight with the same call sign as the chopper in the shop's video travelling from City Airport to Lancashire on Saturday, December 27.

Greater Manchester Police has confirmed they are looking into what has happened while Ribble Valley Borough Council is also investigating a 'possible Covid-19 rule breach', LancsLive has reported on a BBC story.

The video was posted to Instagram by the shop itself and shows a member of staff appearing to deliver the sandwich to the pilot.

The post included the caption: "When your customers are literally flying in to collect their favourite 'Roast Beef in Caramelised Onion Gravy Barms'.

But one person responded that it was 'not the best marketing ploy during a pandemic', with many others saying the idea had backfired.

Simon Hore, who represents Chipping on Ribble Valley Borough Council, told the BBC that the helicopter trip 'does seem to be a flagrant abuse of the restrictions on travel under the current lockdown rules'.

The Manchester Evening News has attempted to contact the business for comment.
