Police investigating fluid attack on woman and daughter say they don't know what it was

A substance thrown at a mum and her child in a drive-by attack have said they have not been able to identify what it was.

The victims were walking on Green Lane, close to Rock Retail Park in Birkenhead, at around 4.30pm on Monday when they were showered with liquid thrown by a passenger in a passing car.

Emergency services were called to the scene after some of the substance landed on the woman and the two are being checked over by paramedics.

Now, police have confirmed that the substance was "non-harmful".

But officers are yet to decide exactly what it was.

The case has now been closed, Merseyside Police said, with no arrests made. The matter will no longer be investigated due to "insufficient evidence".

A spokeswoman said: "The victim has been advised and understands that this will be reopened should we get more details."

The substance was thrown from a black people carrier.

Some of it landed on the woman, but it is not thought any landed on the child.

An investigation was launched and CCTV enquiries were carried out in the local area.

Speaking earlier this week, Chief Inspector Peter Clark said: “This is an unprovoked attack on a woman and a child."
