Police investigating death of woman in Newry

Police are understood to be investigating the death of a woman in Newry.

Sinn Fein councillor Valerie Harte has said they are treating the death as "suspicious".

It is unclear what has happened at this time.

Cllr Valerie Harte said: "A woman's body has been discovered in a house at Damolly Meadows, Newry.

"Police are at this time treating the death as suspicious and are currently investigating the circumstances.

"The thoughts of all with the family of the deceased."

Spokesperson for Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, John McPoland, said: "The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 17:40 on Friday 13 November in the Damolly area of Newry.

"NIAS dispatched a Rapid Response Paramedic and an Emergency crew to the scene.

"Following initial assessment, no one was taken from the scene."

SDLP councillor Michael Savage said: "This is very tragic news coming from our city. The details of the incident are still to be clarified by police.

"The thoughts of the whole community are with the woman's family at this very sad and difficult time."

In the early hours of Saturday morning, the police confirmed they are "investigating the sudden death of a woman in the Damolly Meadows area on Friday 13 November".

A spokesman added: "A post mortem examination will be carried out in due course to determine the cause of death. There are no further details at present."
