Police investigating criminal damage at Pontins Brean Sands after evacuation

Police are investigating criminal damage at Pontins Brean Sands after .

Fire and ambulance crews descended on the venue, near Burnham-on-Sea, yesterday evening (August 27) at around 7pm.

The entire park was closed down while hundreds of holidaymakers were forced to wait on the roadside.

A fire service spokesperson said crews were initially called following reports of a suspected gas leak.

Police have confirmed there was no gas leak or fire, and officers are now investigating an incident of criminal damage.

A spokeswoman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: "The fire service was called to Pontins, Brean on Tuesday evening (August 27) and evacuated guests and staff as a precaution.

"They have since confirmed to police that there was no gas leak or fire.

"Minor criminal damage in a shower area, including shower curtains being pulled down, has been reported to police and is under investigation."

Customers re-entered the venue at around around 8:45pm.

'My children were really scared'

A mum of three described the terrifying moment she heard security guards saying there was a ‘real threat’ as the evacuation got underway.

Laura Pollinger was in her chalet with her three children and partner when she heard everyone being told to leave outside.

“We were really worried,” said the 39-year-old, from Bristol. “No one was telling us what was going on.

“The first we knew about it was hearing a security guard talking on his walkie talkie outside our chalet saying there was a real threat and everyone had to get out.

“We were then told to get off the road to make room for the fire engines.

“They kept moving us further and further away from the park.

“Two major incident vans arrived, there was an ambulance and loads of police.

“My children were really scared, they could hear lots of rumours. People were saying there was a fire and others were saying there had been an explosion.

“We didn’t want to stay anywhere near the place because we had no idea what would happen next. None of the staff seemed to know anything.”
