Police are appealing for information after the brazen theft of five vans used by Guide Dogs Victoria, from the charity's Kew campus.

Thieves used bolt cutters to cut chains securing a gate and gain entry to the campus at around midnight on Christmas night.

The vans are used to transport puppies in training and provide services to those in need.

Guide Dogs Victoria chief executive Karen Hayes said Victorians waiting for their Guide Dog in the new year may now have to wait following the disruption the thefts have caused.

"It's been such a difficult year for Guide Dogs and for so many people," Ms Hayes said.

"To finish the year with a theft of this nature just has a really devastating effect on our ability to deliver services to people who are blind or have low vision."

The vans are specially fitted for transporting Guide Dogs and have a value of around $75,000 each.

Ms Hayes fears the extended time it may take to obtain and refit new vans may negatively affect the people in need and wider community.

"This is just a despicable act by people who clearly have no conscience," Ms Hayes said.

Ms Hayes said all the dogs on site were unharmed.

The stolen vans are branded with Guide Dogs logos and imagery, and anyone who many have seen the vehicles is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
