Police investigating as suspected arson attack causes severe damage to Northumberland sports pavilion

An arson investigation has begun after a blaze broke out at a Northumberland pavilion.

Emergency services were called to the Red Row Welfare pavilion in Red Row at around 4pm on Saturday, with inquiries now underway to establish the cause of the fire that is being treated as arson.

Councillor Scott Dickinson, leader of the Northumberland Labour Party, slammed the culprits and says the pavilion may need to be demolished.

Counc Dickinson, who represents Druridge Bay, said: "It angers me so much that I and they have been called out on a Saturday night to the old pavilion where someone's broken in and set fire to it.

"We're worked so hard with recent improvements and have further plans for the welfare only to have this thrown at us in the middle.

"It'll probably result in it's demolition now rather than the potential plans we had.

"Any information welcome to track down those responsible, things like this do not happen here and they aren't starting now."

A Northumbria Police spokesman said an investigation is ongoing.

He added: “Officers attended the scene at about 4pm on Saturday (February 18) and found damage had been caused to a derelict storage building. Thankfully nobody was injured.

“Enquiries are ongoing into the cause of the fire, which officers are treating as suspected arson.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of our website or by calling 101 quoting crime number 021299X/23.”
