Police have launched an investigation after the windows of a train were smashed in as it travelled from Manchester Piccadilly last night.

The train crew discovered the incident when they were carrying out checks at Dinting in Derbyshire.

It was heading towards Hadfield in Glossop .

This is a popular commuter route and around 39 trains run along it each day.

The stones were thrown with enough force that they shattered two windows and even chipped the metal exterior of the train.

The stones were thrown so violently that the outside of the train was damaged as well as the windows (Handout)

"The incident happened on a service travelling between Manchester Piccadilly and Hadfield at approximately 10.30pm on 9 April. It is believed stones were thrown at the train, causing damage to windows."
