Police investigating after three young girls 'groped by cyclist in his early teens' in Birtley

An investigation is under way after three girls were allegedly groped by a cyclist in Birtley.

A report was made to police on Tuesday morning that the girls, all aged around 16, were assaulted by a cyclist in his early teens.

The suspect then fled the area and the victims contacted the police.

Officers are now appealing for anyone who may have been driving in Birtley and has dashcam footage to come forward and help with their enquiries.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "We can confirm we received reports this morning that a cyclist in Birtley has allegedly groped teenage girls.

"He has then fled the area and the victims, who are all aged around 16-years-old, have reported it to police.

"The cyclist is believed to be aged in his early teens and enquiries to identify him are ongoing.

"Anyone who believes they may know the identity of the cyclist is encouraged to contact police on 101 quoting log 242 01/12/20.

"We would also like anyone who was driving in Birtley this morning, and believes they may have captured the cyclist on their dash-cam, to send it to us through our website."
