Police investigating a 'racist rant' on Metrolink tram during the Manchester derby have arrested a man

Police investigating mobile phone footage which captured a man's alleged racist rant on derby day have made an arrest.

The footage shows a man - who appears to be a Manchester United fan - shouting that Manchester City is a 'tiny club, with a tiny stadium, run by P**i's with P**i money' during a tram ride on Saturday night just after the game kicked off at the Etihad stadium.

The clip was shared widely on social media.

Today Greater Manchester Police confirmed a 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

The suspect remains in police custody where he is being interviewed by officers in connection with the incident on the Bury Metrolink line at 5.45pm on Saturday prior to the tram pulling into Radcliffe station.

Chief Inspector Matt Bailey-Smith, of GMP’s Transport Unit, said: “Racism of any form is wrong and will not be tolerated in our society.

"As a Transport Unit we are determined to ensure that anyone who feels they have experienced any form of racial abuse or intimidation on public transport can contact police, with the confidence that we will act swiftly to bring those responsible to justice.”

In the clip, a man can then be heard shouting '20 times... 20' - a reference to how many times Manchester United have won the Premier League title.

The man, who appears to be drunk, is later heard saying: "I do apologise, I'm actually a normal man with kids, but City fans just rub me up the wrong way.

"With their s***t stadium and s***t fans."

The footage shows horrified passengers repeatedly asking the man to be quiet.

One is heard telling him 'you're a racist' and 'you're disgusting'.

The man then appears to say: "Nah. It's run by P**i money.

"You like blowing up the arena do you? That's what funds you."

The footage then shows him shouting: "We've got more class in the Stretford End then the entire s******e you can't fill.

The game, which kicked off at 5.30pm, ended in a 2-1 win for United.
