Police investigate the death of a baby girl hit by a train in Melbourne

A three-month-old baby died after being struck by a train at Upwey, in Melbourne's outer-east. (ABC News)

Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a three-month-old baby girl who was hit by a train last night in Upwey, in Melbourne's outer-east.

The child's mother was also hit by the train and is in a critical condition in hospital.

The woman is also under police guard.

Emergency services were called to Kumbada Avenue in Upwey at around 5:10pm yesterday after reports the pair had been hit by a train.

The child was flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries but later died.
