Police investigate second fatal shooting in Pomona

March 16--Police were investigating a second deadly shooting in Pomona on Monday, several days after a 23-year-old man was found dead in a parking lot and investigators named a rookie Los Angeles police officer a person of interest in that case.

The latest shooting happened about 12:30 a.m. Monday in the 1200 block of West 3rd Street, near South Myrtle Avenue, said Supervisor Miguel Ornelas of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The victim's identity was not immediately available.

Pomona police declined to comment to The Times, stating that more information about the ongoing investigation would be available around 8 a.m.

The fatal shooting early Monday was about one mile from where Salome Rodriguez Jr. of Ontario was shot early Friday, next to a restaurant on 3rd and Main streets, where he ran bleeding for more than a block before collapsing in a parking lot under a dogwood tree.

Rodriguez and rookie LAPD Officer Henry Solis, 27, had gone to Vive Tequila Lounge and Nightclub in downtown Pomona, which remained open after 2 a.m., said Lt. Ronald McDonald, of the Pomona Police Department.

A Volkswagen Jetta belonging to Solis, a Pomona resident, was found a few blocks from where Friday morning's fatal shooting occurred, at the corner of Monterey and Main streets, at 1 p.m. Sunday, police said.
