Police are investigating the rape of a 12-year-old girl who was followed through streets by a man before she was attacked.

Cleveland Police revealed details of the attack, which happened in the evening on November 15 in the Sheraton Park area of Stockton-on-Tees.

The force said a 12-year-old girl was approached by a stranger at the traffic lights on Durham Road opposite the Mile House pub.

The man then followed the girl along Darlington Lane towards Sheraton Park, then raped her in a secluded area.

The suspect is black, in his twenties, around 6ft, muscular and spoke with a local accent.

He wore tight black jeans which were ripped at the knees and a dark-coloured top and baseball cap.

Officers have appealed for any drivers in the area at the time to contact police, particularly if they have dashcam footage.

Specialist officers were working with the victim and her family to give them support.

Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
