Police investigate NRL star Cody Walker's claim he was blackmailed over fight footage

South Sydney rugby league star Cody Walker claims he is being blackmailed over video footage of him in a fight last year.

The Rabbitohs five-eighth told NSW Police someone demanded he pay $20,000 or they would make the video public.

The fight is believed to be between him and one other man in October last year.

The Rabbitohs said Walker had never been the subject of a police enquiry regarding the fight, which took place in northern NSW.

In a statement, the club also said they had already been aware of the incident.

The ABC understands Cody Walker intervened in a fight involving a relative, with the video allegedly showing the Rabbitohs player kicking the other man in the chest.

Walker, 30, will now speak to the NRL integrity unit about the fight.

"The Rabbitohs will be making no further comment on this matter at this stage as it is part of an ongoing police enquiry instigated by Cody Walker himself," a club statement said.

NSW Police told the ABC threats were made to Walker over the phone on Saturday May 16.

The matter was then reported to police yesterday afternoon and South Sydney Area Police command were investigating.

Walker made headlines last year after he began a boycott of the national anthem at the Indigenous All Stars Match, which other players later joined.
