Police investigate Liverpool flare after young Chelsea fan is left needing medical attention

Police are investigating an incident from Liverpool’s win over Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday which resulted in a nine-year-old Blues fan needing medical attention.

A flare was thrown from the top tier of the Anfield Road End into the away end below after Sadio Mane’s second-half goal during Liverpool’s 2-0 win on Sunday.

The flare landed among Chelsea supporters and a boy is understood to have suffered a panic attack. Police are now looking into the situation to try to determine who threw the flare.

A Liverpool spokesman said: “Any person found to have committed this offence will be banned from our ground.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool have condemned fans over alleged homophobic chants directed at the travelling Chelsea support during the same match.

A statement said: “The club is also concerned about a chant from some of our fans, specifically referencing Chelsea, as inappropriate and offensive.

"We would urge all Liverpool supporters to respect each other and stop such chants as they do not reflect the inclusivity that the club stands for. As a proud member of Stonewall’s Diversity Champions programme, we are committed to LGBT equality across all areas of the Club and have contacted them and our own affiliated LBGT group Kop Outs for further support.”
