Police investigate homophobic hate mail sent to cake specialists

Uddingston cake specialists were shocked to receive homophobic hate mail in the post yesterday.

Special Days Cakes owners Stephen Whyteside and Michael Burns were absolutely disgusted to receive a vile letter in the mail.

And Michael posted the letter on Facebook to show its contents.

The handwritten letter read: “Dear p****,

“If I had known you were f****** gay I would have given your shop a wide berth.

“I will be returning to get my money back as I don’t want any of your hands near any food. You should be shut down.

“Ya f****** queer p**** p****”

Stephen said: “The letter came in the post yesterday. A member of our staff called us crying to tell us what she found. I was just so shocked.

“The girls were smart and quickly put the letter in a polypocket so the police can come and look for it.

“I just don’t understand, it isn’t any of our customers, it is a targeted attack. It worries me a bit that this is still happening in 2019 but the support we have had online has been so overwhelming, we’ve had cake companies message us from London sending their support.

“Our local councillors and MSPs have also been sending their support. It’s amazing to see a community come together when things like this happen.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: ““We can confirm that a complaint was received on Thursday, September 19, 2019, and enquiries are ongoing into this hate crime.””
