Police investigate five 'unexplained deaths' in 24 hours in North Lanarkshire

An investigation has been launched after five unexplained drugs deaths in the North Lanarkshire area in just 24 hours.

Emergency services raced to a property on Merryston Court in Coatbridge where they discovered the body of a 23-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man on Friday afternoon.

Another two bodies were found by officers elsewhere in the North Lanarkshire area later that day, reports the Daily Record .

A fifth person was confirmed to have been found dead on Saturday.

All of the deaths are being treated by Police Scotland as unexplained.

One line of investigation is that the deaths are drug related.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Police were called around 12pm on Friday, April 3, 2020, following the sudden death of a 23-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man at an address at Merryston Court, Coatbridge.

"The deaths are currently being treated as unexplained and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”

Another statement read: “Enquiries continue into four unexplained deaths in the North Lanarkshire area on Friday, April 3, and a fifth on Saturday, April 4.

"As with all unexplained deaths, officers will keep an open mind and explore all avenues of enquiry in order to seek answers for a person's family and community.

"None of the deaths are currently being treated as suspicious and we are yet to find definitive evidence to link these, but investigations continue."
