Police investigate fatal hit and run in Melbourne's north-east

Police said the hit and run happened around 2:51am this morning at St Helena. (ABC News)

Police are trying to find the driver of a vehicle that hit and killed a homeless man in the early hours of this morning in Melbourne's north-east.

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit said the man was crossing a road in St Helena when he was struck by a vehicle around 2:51am.

The driver failed to stop and left the scene.

The pedestrian died at the scene and is yet to be identified by police.

Detective Inspector Roger Schranz said the man who died was aged between 40 and 50.

"We believe that he's homeless and dosses down in that area," he said.

It is believed the man was either on or beside the road when he was struck.

Police want to speak to the driver of an SUV that was seen in the area at the time of the incident.

Detectives believe the driver of that SUV could either be responsible for the accident, or a witness.

The incident happened near the intersection of St Helena Road and Wallowa Road.

"It's very quiet at that time of the morning and it's very dark as well. It happened between two sets of lights so it was in a dark spot, Inspector Schranz said.

"It may well be that the driver didn't know that it was a person that he struck. We really don't know the circumstances at this stage."

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam footage to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
