A police investigation is ongoing after a number of explosions in Melbourne's east and northeast. (AAP)

Police are investigating a series of explosions that occurred in Melbourne's east and northeast overnight.

The first two explosions occurred on James Street in Northcote and Maltravers Road in Ivanhoe between 8.30pm and 9pm on Sunday.

Police attended both scenes and found a number of letterboxes and rubbish bins that had been destroyed.

An explosive device was also placed inside a washing machine on the back of a ute parked on Kilby Road in Kew East. It detonated about 9.10pm, causing extensive damage to the car.

No one was injured in any of the incidents and the investigation is ongoing.
