Police investigate 'disturbing attack' after horses slashed

Police in Somerset are investigating after two horses were slashed in the face with what is thought to be a knife.

The pair were injured in their stables last Wednesday night or Thursday morning (December 4-5), in what police describe as a “disturbing attack” with “no apparent motive".

The cuts were severe enough to require emergency treatment including stitches and staples.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police told Somerset Live: “We’re investigating an incident at stables in the Pitway Hill area of South Petherton in which two horses were injured.

“The horses, one female and one male, suffered cuts on their faces caused by a sharp object, possibly a knife, sometime between 10pm on Wednesday, December 4, and 8.45am the following day.

“Both horses needed emergency treatment, including stitches and staples, and they are on continuing medication.”

PCSO Nikolaus Burge, from the neighbourhood team, said: “This is a very disturbing attack on two horses for no apparent motive.

“While offences like this are very rare, we’d encourage horse owners in the area to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.

“If you’ve seen or heard anything suspicious around the Pitway Hill area of South Petherton on the night of the incident, or the days before, or are aware of any similar incidents which haven’t been reported to the police, please contact us via our website – or call 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5219281331.”
