Police investigate complaint over how they handled alleged second sighting of Dominic Cummings

Durham Police are investigating a complaint from a couple about their handling of an alleged sighting of Dominic Cummings in the county during lockdown.

Dave and Clare Edwards put in an official complaint to the Independent Office for Police Conduct on Wednesday about Durham Police’s inquiry into their allegations.

Durham Constabulary said there was "insufficient evidence" and the couple took the matter further to challenge whether their claim was taken seriously.

The force is now probing the claims, the Mirror reports.

Mr Cummings admitted driving up on March 27 to self-isolate with his family 250-miles away in County Durham following a joint Mirror/Guardian probe.

He was then reportedly spotted with his wife in Houghall Woods near the family’s Durham home by the Edwardses, both 59, two weeks after the first sighting.

The couple said they were "100 per cent certain" they saw Mr Cummings.

Mr Cummings has described the allegations that he made a second trip to the North East as "false."

Boris Johnson's top aide, who works in Downing Street as the Prime Minister’s chief-of-staff and lives in London, was previously supported by the Prime Minister who said had his "full support."

A No10 spokesman said: "[Durham Police] have made clear they are not taking action."
