Police investigate baby boy's death in Tennant Creek

About 3,000 people live in the town of Tennant Creek.

Northern Territory Police say they are investigating the death of a baby in Tennant Creek earlier today.

In a statement, police said they responded to a call at a home in Tennant Creek at 9:17am.

"On arrival an infant was found unresponsive," they said.

"Paramedics transported the child to the Tennant Creek Hospital. He was pronounced deceased a short time later."

NT Police said an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the baby's death was now underway and no further information was available at this stage.

Tennant Creek is about five hours' drive from the nearest towns of Alice Springs or Mt Isa.

The baby boy's death comes less than a month after a five-month-old Aboriginal baby girl died in Katherine while her mother was in police custody.

The ABC understands the baby girl had been left with her father and grandfather, who had been drinking.
