A section of the M5 was closed for nine hours today after a man was found dead down an embankment
All three lanes were closed between J10 (Cheltenham) and J11 (Gloucester) on the southbound carriageway, as well as the entry slip road at J9 after police discovered the body around 5:30am.
Motorists were forced to follow diversions all day while emergency crews investigated the scene.
The motorway was reopened around 3pm, more than nine hours after the incident.
Police have now launched a major appeal for dash cam footage.
A Gloucestershire Police spokesperson said: "Officers are asking motorists for any dash cam footage that may help their enquiries into a fatal collision on the M5 overnight.
"A motorist spotted and reported a small silver hatchback car down an embankment around a mile south of the junction 10 exit for Cheltenham just before 5.30am today (Thursday 8 August).
"Officers attended and a man, believed to be the driver, was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
"No one else was in the vehicle.
"Enquiries are ongoing to identify and inform the man's next of kin.
"Initial enquiries have been made and it is believed that the car got on the M5 at junction 4A at Bromsgrove and travelled down the M5 between 10.30pm and 11.30pm yesterday (Wednesday 7 August) before the collision happened.
"Collision investigators are asking lorry and car drivers who were travelling on the M5 last night between those hours and who may have dash cam footage that could assist police to call 101 or email 101@gloucestershire.police.uk and quote incident 72 of 8 August."
