Police investigate after 'van driver approaches girls' next to Edinburgh school

Police are investigating after reports of a van driver approaching three schoolgirls and "staring intently" at them, causing them to run away in fear.

The incident is said to have taken place on a street next to Portobello High School around 2.15pm on Friday.

The three girls, who are of S1 age, were heading home via Park Lane after lunch when school had finished.

One noticed a white van drive past them then before it reversed slowly back towards them and stopped.

The driver, said to be in his 60s, had a small white dog in his lap. The girls said he "stared intensely" at them, causing them to fear for their safety and run to one of their parents' homes.

A parent, who did not wish to be named, told Edinburgh Live: "When they arrived at our house my daughter hammered on the door shouting, "LET US IN!" and looked absolutely terrified.

"When they told me what happened I phoned the police on 999 and they immediately went to see if they could find the van before coming to our house, they arrived within 30 minutes."

She said a similar incident involving a man in a white van with dogs had been reported in the same area last year.

Police Scotland have spoken to the girls involved and the force says their enquiries into the matter are continuing.

Anyone with information can contact police on 101, quoting incident number 2140 of October 25.
