Police investigate after terraced house gutted by fire

Police have launched an investigation into a fire which caused major damage to a house in north Liverpool.

Neighbours were evacuated from their homes after a fire broke out at a terraced house in Astor Street, Walton, at around 9pm last night.

The emergency services were called out to the scene at around 9.20pm following reports of a house fire. Mersey Fire and Rescue sent three engines to the scene, near to the Queens Drive flyover.

A spokesperson for the fire service said the fire was inside a derelict house. The house was empty at the time and there were no reports of injuries.

Photographs taken from the scene earlier today show extensive damage to the first floor of the terraced house.

A police cordon was still in place and emergency workers were inside the house inspecting the scene.

A police spokesman described the damage to the house as "extensive" and confirmed an investigation has been launched into the cause of the blaze.

A spokesman said: "We were contacted at just before 9.20pm last night, Monday 4th January, following reports of a fire at a property in Astor Street in Liverpool.
