Police investigate after man caught drawing swastikas on road and pavement in Manchester

Police are investigating after a man was caught on camera drawing swastikas in south Manchester.

Footage captured by a CCTV camera shows the man wearing a blue cap, navy jumper and dark tracksuit bottoms using chalk to draw the racist symbol on the pavement and the road in Levenshulme.

He was spotted in the act by local residents who have reacted with horror and reported the incident as a hate crime.

One woman, who asked not to be named, said: "I was just heading out when I saw it - I couldn't believe it.

"My boyfriend went out and cleaned it up. Levenshulme is a very multi-cultural area and there's such a sense of community."

It is believed at least three swastikas were drawn in chalk on Chapel Street, Back Chapel Street and Elbow Road.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed they were called to reports of racist graffiti at around 2.15pm yesterday.

Both symbols had been removed prior to officers attending and inquiries are ongoing into the incident.

No arrests have been made.

Inspector Shoheb Chowdhury, of GMP's City of Manchester South Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "Hate crime has no place in Greater Manchester and it will not be tolerated.

"We understand how upsetting these incidents can be for our community and we are determined to find the person responsible.

"Anyone with information, including CCTV and dashcam footage, is urged to contact GMP on 101 quote incident reference number 1628 of 12/08/21."

Information can be reported online or by using the Live Chat function at www.gmp.police.uk.

Alternatively, you can report to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
